Community Support Needed
On June 30th nine members of the City’s Planning Advisory Committee (PAC) submitted changes to the City’s land use plan in support of Envision Lā’ie proposals. These proposed changes include expansion options for BYU-Hawaii and the Polynesian Cultural Center, the relocation of housing designations to Malaekahana with sufficient unit numbers to address pent-up demand and growth, and village centers in Lā’ie and Malaekahana.
These Envision Lā’ie proposals will be reviewed at two meetings in the next couple of weeks:
·The Ko‘olau Loa Neighborhood Board has called for a special meeting on Thursday, July 30, 7-9 p.m. at Lā’ie Elementary School (click here to view the official notice). The agenda includes a presentation by the Envision Lā’ie team, a public comment/question period, and a board vote. We expect that many with diverse interests will attend – we encourage supporters to come early in the gold LCA t-shirts to indicate their support for economic development, jobs and housing. A show of community support is critical.
· The PAC is holding an internal meeting on Wednesday, August 5, 7-9 p.m. at the Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center in Punalu‘u. At this meeting the PAC will internally discuss proposed changes to the City’s land use plan, including those in support of Envision Lā’ie proposals.
We believe the Envision Lā’ie proposals ensure the best chances of a sustainable community for future generations.

Just a comment to help balance the record – the majority at the Neighborhood Board meeting testified in favor of affordable housing which HRI has had zoning to provide since the early 90s and before but has never built. It was a minority testifying that wholeheartedly supported the entire plan which includes market housing likely to become second homes. The Honolulu Weekly article with the exception of the quote from Wheelwright discussed the mistake it would be for this to go forward. There was nothing in the article to support the development. I hope that the people of La`ie will look at other media and sites and not just take the partial incomplete and misleading information that they get from HRI, BYU and PCC they deserve better.
