A quick thank you to everyone who came out and attended the final Community Meeting on the Ko‘olau Loa Sustainable Communities Plan. Here’s how Civil Beat’s Michael Levine opened his story on the meeting (subscription required):
Any questions about the opinion of the majority were quickly answered with one glance at the wardrobe selection. Support for the Koolau Loa Sustainable Communities Plan broke down color lines.
A sea of hundreds of proponents sporting baby blue T-shirts filled nearly the entirety of the Kahuku High and Intermediate School cafeteria Tuesday for a public hearing. Lined up against one wall and scattered throughout the crowd were a few dozen green shirts proclaiming “Keep the Country Country.”
“Look around you and what do you see?” one person testified. “Blue, because we represent the community.”
To comment on Ko‘olau Loa Sustainable Communities Draft Plan, please click here. A new email message addressed to the city’s consultant will pop-up, with “cc” copies addressed to the city’s Department of Planning and Permitting and the Lā‘ie Community Association (for general tally purposes). Note: Mac Mail users may need to insert a comma in the place of the semi-colon between the two “cc” addresses. You can also send an email directly to: info@hhf.com, info@honoluludpp.org and info@laiecommunityassociation.org.
Comments need not be lengthy to be effective — a statement regarding your support for the plan and why you want to see it implemented is fine. However, all comments should include a name and an address. Encourage your household members, family and friends to send in their comments too — every opinion matters and every voice counts.
Comments are being accepted until Jan. 15, 2011.

I was in attendance at the Envision Laie community mtg last night. I support the expansion plans for BYU, PCC, and HRI. More importantly I support additional affordable housing in the area for my children. I heard a couple of things that night by the opposition that contains some merit. First, before anything further happens, is there any way of addressing the issue of fixing current problems that we have. First, the flooding and lack of drainage on the old side of Laie? How can the facilities at Laie Park be improved? Decrease speeding in our community by installing speed bumps along our busy streets. How can we help in sustaining a fully functional Hospital in our community? Second, can you define affordable housing and workforce housing? What are the exact percentages of each type of housing in our area? What are the estimated cost to purchase either?
