After a two month delay over liability insurance, construction on the Malaekahana bike path has officially begun. “As the coordinating association between private businesses, volunteers and landowner Hawaii Reserves,” said Pane Meatoga, Jr., Laie Community Association president, “we needed to get liability insurance in place before any work began. That took much longer than we expected or wanted. ”

Now, as seen in the video, work is underway. “We appreciate J.C. Chang’s volunteer work on the backhoe to kick off this great community service project.” The new bike path will stretch along the mauka side of Kamehameha Highway between Lā‘ie and Kahuku and is the first project to come out of the Envision Lā‘ie process.

Volunteer work schedules will be coordinated by LCA board member, Kevin Schlag. Those wishing to assist should e-mail Kevin at itcouldbekevin@gmail.com.

i think it is awesome that there is going to be a bike path. my whole life i was always afraid of riding my bike to malaekahana because kam. hwy is so dangerous and not safe to ride unless there is a bike path. what a relief. i just wish there was one when i was growing up.
